With the Covid-19 pandemic gripping the world & the economy, I am certain you would have come across several opinions on how everyone will eventually move towards working from home or better said; WFH.
TCS recently announced that by the year 2025, they will ask 75% of its 4.48 lakh employees globally (including 3.5 lakh in India) to work from home, up from the industry average of 20% today.
Most large companies are looking to follow suit with the unexpected surge in productivity from their employees during the lockdown.
All this news and revelation has forced everyone to think the inevitable question; Is remote working here to stay?
TLDR to this question is a resounding yes. It was meant to happen over a few years, now COVID-19 has surely accelerated the adoption.

Contrary to primitive belief, Deloitte’s report ‘Future of Work accelerated’ revealed that 70% of CXO’s reported no negative impact from forced adoption of this new way of working. Decision making is faster, as meetings are structured with pre-defined duration and agenda. 90% of CXO’s believe that their teams are putting in extra hours and absenteeism has reduced significantly.
Earlier, having the ability to work from home was a luxury offered to some roles that needed less to zero collaboration. During the Covid-19, with all the collaboration tools available for teams, even the less equipped firms are forced to find ways to leverage technology. Only to discover that it is, in fact, easier to collaborate now more than ever.
Countries on lockdown for extended periods has massively impacted the economic cycle where businesses need to ensure cost efficiencies going further. With less impacted employee productivity, potential savings from the reduction of office space requirements makes a good case for remote working as a way forward.
Working from home and remote working are not novel concepts that emerged from the spread of this pandemic. Most large ITes organizations had constituted this as part of their offered perks. It is the other business leaders that have gained insight on the efficiency increase while working from home during the lockdown. Pre-COVID only 15%-20% of employees had ever worked from home. More than 80% of businesses never needed to explore this way of working, only until they had to.
Soon we will no longer hear people and organizations talk about remote working and its pervasiveness, but how one would set new benchmarks of productivity while remotely working.
